Following a nationwide search, Susan M. Szulewski, MD, MBA, has been selected as the chief medical officer for McLean Hospital and vice president of Medical Affairs for Mass General Brigham Behavioral and Mental Health (MGB-BMH), effective November 1.
In this new position, Szulewski, who is currently the associate chief medical officer for McLean, medical director of McLean’s Clinical Evaluation Center, and medical director of BMH inpatient programs, will provide executive oversight of a comprehensive portfolio of programs across McLean and MGB-BMH.
Working closely with the office of the Mass General Brigham Chief Medical Officer, she will play a key role in implementing systemwide unified quality strategies.
Szulewski will be responsible for the oversight of medical policies and professionalism for physicians and advanced practice providers within McLean and across MGB-BMH.
Two of her primary areas of responsibility will be serving as the physician executive in support of the quality, safety, experience, and equity teams at McLean and across MGB-BMH and overseeing the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) program, providing input regarding graduate education programs as related to McLean and MGB-BMH practitioners.
“Susan has been an exceptional leader at McLean. Her extensive clinical expertise and collaborative work with colleagues from across disciplines and campuses to develop process and quality improvement initiatives have had positive impacts on our patient care environment,” said Scott L. Rauch, MD, chair of MGB-BMH and president and psychiatrist in chief for McLean.
“Susan’s collaborative approach, skill in consensus building, combined with her natural curiosity and astute business acumen, position her to be a successful and engaged leader who will adeptly lead transformative initiatives, bringing together the best clinical practices of McLean and MGB-BMH.”
In support of McLean and MGB’s continued collaboration and integration, Szulewski will have a reporting relationship both to Rauch and to Mass General Brigham Chief Medical Officer Tom Sequist, MD.
“I am both extremely proud and humbled to take on these new roles and expanded responsibilities within the McLean and MGB-BMH communities,” Szulewski said.
“Living our mission, which includes providing every patient the best possible behavioral and mental health care according to their individual needs—including their psychiatric acuity and medical complexity—and to work with such an outstanding team of colleagues, is a tremendous honor.”
As Szulewski takes on her new role as CMO, Joseph Gold, MD, who has served McLean as the CMO for more than a decade, will assume his new position as associate chief for Clinical Services at McLean.
In this position, Gold will work closely with Szulewski and physician leadership across McLean to recruit and retain medical staff, while also continuing to oversee the hospital’s clinical portfolio and mission.
“Having Susan and Joe serving in these clinical leadership roles will enhance our already outstanding clinical programs at McLean and across MGB-BMH,” Rauch said.
Szulewski, who joined the McLean community in 2015, earned her medical degree from the University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland, completed her psychiatry residency at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University General Psychiatry Training Program, and completed her MBA with a focus on health care from the Heller School at Brandeis University.
“I would also like to offer my sincerest gratitude to the search committee, led by Shelly F. Greenfield, MD, MPH, chief academic officer for McLean, and Rachel Sisodia, MD, chief quality officer for Mass General Brigham,” Rauch said.
