The McLean SouthEast (MSE) Adult Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program focuses on group therapies and skill building to treat individuals ages 18 and older struggling with depression and anxiety disorders, with or without other co-occurring mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders.

Covered by most health insurance providers, our day program accommodates up to 16 individuals in need of more intensive care than is offered through outpatient services. The program operates Monday through Friday, 9am to 3pm. Average participation is between 5 and 10 days.

Please note that we do not treat active symptoms of psychosis or substance addiction. The program is voluntary and patients must agree to abstain from using alcohol and drugs for the duration of the program.

The MSE Adult Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program is ideal for individuals who:

  • Have mood disorders such as depression or anxiety, with or without other coexisting mental health conditions
  • Require intensive treatment but are stable enough for partial hospital level of care
  • Are sober or willing to abstain from alcohol and drugs during treatment

Patients follow structured schedules targeted at reducing the severity of the patient’s symptoms and focused on different cognitive behavior therapy strategies to prevent relapse.

Designed to engage patients in their recovery, each day is carefully planned with ample time for self-focus, team meetings, group treatment, and expressive arts therapy.

We understand that mental health affects not only the individual but also the entire family, which is why our compassionate and experienced staff takes a comprehensive approach to treatment and recovery, incorporating loved ones in patient care as appropriate.

Our evidence-based treatment and therapy models are informed by cutting-edge research conducted at McLean and around the world. By incorporating various approaches, treatment can be customized for each individual to help ensure recovery.

Our expert staff specializes in a wide range of mental health disorders and is devoted to improving the quality of life of patients and their families.

The McLean SouthEast Adult Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program is located in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Established in 1999 in conjunction with the MSE Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Program, the programs provide mental health care and resources to patients and families in the southeast region of the state, including Cape Cod and the Islands.

MSE is located in a recently renovated one-story building in a private, suburban neighborhood. The spacious facility, with landscaped grounds and comfortable common areas, offers a warm and welcoming environment that is conducive to treatment and rehabilitation.

Treatment Approach

Our therapeutic day program provides treatment for patients who do not require 24-hour care yet need more structure and intensive psychiatric supervision than is available in outpatient treatment. Our highly structured intervention is ideal for individuals who are in crisis but can safely reside in the community.

Using cutting-edge treatments, tools, and techniques to help ensure recovery, clinicians focus on a person-centered model to create a customized treatment plan for each individual based on his or her specific diagnoses, symptoms, and goals.

Our multidisciplinary treatment approach combines structured group programming with case management and psychiatry. Our capacity is 16 patients, with the length of participation averaging 5-10 days. The program operates Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm.

The emphasis of the day program, reinforced by evidence-based treatment and cutting-edge therapy models, is to provide a sufficient level of stability for the patient to be able to transition to an outpatient level of care.

Group therapy is a main component of treatment at the MSE Partial Hospital Program

The day program is available to referrals from community providers and hospitals or as step-down treatment from MSE’s inpatient care.

On the first day, each patient meets with members of the clinical treatment team who work together to provide psychiatric stabilization, evaluate symptoms, conduct a full medication assessment, and identify family support and community resources.

Patients attend an intensive schedule of groups and expressive arts therapies. The specifics of the schedule vary from day to day so that the groups attended over the course of a week may cover a variety of topics, including mindfulness, motivation, illness and symptom management, social skills, education, impulse control, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), expressive therapies, and more.

Each day is carefully planned and allows time for self-focus as well as group work.

While our primary modality is CBT—a therapy model that helps patients connect thoughts and actions—we also employ other approaches such as the systems model, which focuses on patient-family and patient-community relationships to help nurture change and development, and positive psychology, which focuses on building upon good thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as well as boosting personal strengths.

We help identify appropriate community agencies and primary care providers for each patient and family.

The program includes medication management to reduce symptoms and restore the patient’s functional abilities. We also emphasize patient education to increase overall understanding of the illness and strengthen coping skills. Staff work with patients to set goals for pursuing a meaningful life path.

Family meetings are encouraged at McLean SouthEast. Our team meets with the family to collect information and collaborate on the treatment plan. We also focus on family education to help strengthen the patient’s social support system and improve management of stress for family members.
