Visitor Information
Helpful Information for Patients, Families, and Friends
Family members and friends may visit patients in inpatient and residential treatment programs at McLean Hospital, with permission of the patient and within program policies.
Before visiting, friends and families may find it useful to review our Guides to Care which contain helpful information for patients, families, and friends.
More information on visitor policies can also be found on the Mass General Brigham website.
Visiting a Patient
Visiting hours are 2-8pm, seven days a week. Patients may have a maximum of two visitors at a time. The only exception to this policy is for support persons.
We ask visitors to delay their visit if they are experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms or are diagnosed with or exposed to COVID-19 within 10 days of a visit.
Visiting a family member or friend who is a patient in an inpatient or residential program at a psychiatric hospital is different from acute care hospital settings where visiting hours are more flexible.
A patient, together with his or her clinical treatment team, decides on the nature and frequency of visits. The decision is made based on what is best for the patient and his or her recovery.
Visiting hours and policies for our inpatient and residential programs vary by program. More information on visiting hours can be found in the FAQ section of each program’s webpage.
Visitors may also find it helpful to understand more about patient privacy before visiting with their loved one.
With any specific visiting questions, please contact the patient’s treatment program.

Know Before You Go
When you visit your loved ones at McLean Hospital, you provide crucial emotional support that will aid in their treatment and recovery. With this in mind, hospital staff is available to answer questions and provide needed services.
Before you arrive at McLean, we ask that you review the hospital’s guide for patients and families.
Of particular importance are the guide’s rules regarding what personal items can and cannot be brought to the hospital. To ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors, several items are not allowed.
Please be sure to review this list of items patients may need and items that are restricted.
We ask visitors to follow the guidelines established by each program as specific policies may differ. If you have questions, contact the patient’s social worker or nursing staff.
