December 29, 2023

Recently, McLean Hospital was proud to honor actor, writer, and comedian John Mulaney with the 2023 McLean Award at the hospital’s Annual Dinner held on November 3 after a three-year hiatus.

McLean presents the award to individuals who have furthered the public’s understanding of psychiatric illness and mental health. Previous honorees include singer and actress Selena Gomez, NFL star Brandon Marshall, ABC news anchor Elizabeth Vargas, and singer Judy Collins.

Mulaney, an Emmy Award-winning performer, through his comedy specials and media appearances, has been vocal about his own struggles with addiction, as well as the importance of seeking treatment.

His advocacy and willingness to speak candidly about his substance use disorder is bringing light and awareness to the importance of addressing addiction and supporting those in recovery.

The dinner, held at the InterContinental Hotel Boston, welcomed over 400 guests to learn about the vital programs, innovative research, and compelling patient stories that happen at McLean each year.

Programs addressing addiction at McLean have grown in importance as more families and patients have been touched by addiction in recent years.

“Substance use disorder affects millions of people worldwide, and the numbers continue to rise,” explained McLean Hospital President and Psychiatrist in Chief Scott L. Rauch, MD, who presented Mulaney with the McLean Award.

“It is vitally important that we continue to have open and honest dialogues about substance use disorder, as well as all behavioral and mental health conditions,” Rauch continued.

“When a popular celebrity like John Mulaney uses their public platform to highlight mental health, it increases awareness and understanding and lets other people who may be struggling know that they are not alone and that there is no shame in asking for help. All of us at McLean are proud to join together to honor John’s advocacy and celebrate the incredible work across McLean to advance the care and science of mental health.”
