Amy C. Janes, PhD, director of the Functional Integration of Addiction Research Laboratory at the McLean Imaging Center, was elected president of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD).
An independent organization of more than 1,000 members, the CPDD works to advance scientific approaches to substance use and addictive disorders. The organization collaborates with government officials, businesses, academic institutions, and other groups on initiatives related to the prevention, research, treatment, and epidemiology of drug and alcohol misuse.
The director of the McLean Imaging Center, Scott E. Lukas, PhD, congratulated Janes on her new position. “This is an outstanding accomplishment,” Lukas said. “The college will surely benefit from her insight, experience, and leadership.”
Lukas called on members of the McLean community to extend their “hearty congratulations to Dr. Janes for this outstanding honor, as she will continue in the tradition of providing exceptional leadership toward the goal of preventing and treating drug and alcohol dependence.”

A leader in the field of addiction research, Janes uses clinical neuroimaging to investigate how differences in brain function, chemistry, and structure influence drug use and relapse. Janes also uses this technology to examine links between drug use and psychopathology and works toward the development of treatments for addictive disorders.
In her role as CPDD president, Janes will bring her experience to several initiatives aimed at strengthening the organization.
“As president, I will work with the executive committee and board of directors to enhance the diversity of CPDD in terms of its membership and the breadth of research presented at the annual meeting,” she explained. Moreover, Janes will support junior scientists who are new to the field of substance use disorder research.
CPDD members voted for Janes to become the group’s 2021-2022 President-Elect in February.
At the same time, new members of CPDD’s board of directors were elected. The new leaders will take office at the end of the CPDD 83rd Annual Scientific Meeting. This virtual event is scheduled for June 21-24, 2021.
